Overseed with Compost?

Hi All,

I have a decent lawn currently, about 1/2 acre. I am looking to overseed in the fall, and was going to either (a) spread topsoil lightly, about 1/4" over the entire property to help topdress the seed i put down or (b) spread seed, followed by 1/4" of compost over the entire property

Any suggestions? I want to fill in some thinner parts of the lawn, and thicken it up
