Aeration & Seeding in the spring?

Customers are always asking for soil & seed and/or aeration in the spring.
The few I did last spring of course didn't follow directions to water and got bad results.
How do you get the best results for spring seeding (Northeast) ?
Soil + seed ? Aerate + overseed ?
And is aeration in spring generally a bad idea ? Ive read it just make more room for weeds.
